Ms Singapore Universe Yesterday's New Paper carried a picture of our Ms Singapore Universe who was wearing an evening gown for one of the segment. I guess contestants could wear any attire for this segment as I saw the Aussie Universe in cowboy gear and the P.Rican Universe(Ms Universe 2006) in a stunning evening gown wear. Ms Singapore Universe was wearing a black long sleeve top which had a slit all the way to her stomach and black shorts.
To be fair, I will have to congratulate Ms Singapore Universe as it takes loads of confidence, courage and nerves of steel to represent our tiny island in an international competition and perhaps educate some of the ignorant contestants about our tiny island. It's not easy for our Ms Singapore Universe not to be fazed by the competition as the contestants are BEAUTIFUL. More importantly, it's not easy for a Singaporean woman to wear a bikini in front of the worldwide audience as it takes tons of courage and confidence.
She looked good in the bikini as you all can see(can be subjective) as it emphasised her figure and I will dare say that she's better than some of the previous Ms Singapore Universe. However, the evening gown segment was a big disappointment as the attire was a bit distasteful. Firstly, I cannot imagine what the guy was thinking when he made the dress for Ms Singapore. Secondly, Ms Singapore Universe told the press that the contestants praised her for being daring with her choice of attire. I guess the contestants were only trying to be nice with their comments as I believe they wouldn't want to be caught in that attire.
I personally feel that Ms Singapore Universe should have either worn a cheongsam, sari or even a baju-karong as these attire would have made her look sexy and yet tasteful. I guess some of the contestants from the other countries would have worn the attire mentioned above and there was a need for Ms Singapore Universe to be unique, I guess.
I guess people are critical of our contestant as she's a representative of our country and we feel she needs to project an image which we feel will give others a favourable impression. I'm sure she has done her best though her choice of attire was disappointing. Let's give credit where it's due and not heap unfair lopsided criticism on her!
